Teba information

Teba is a town of the Málaga province, Andalucía. The municipality must have been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by some stone and bronze tools found in Pilarejo and Cueva de las Palomas. But it was in Roman times when Teba, known as Attegua, was an important location in which battles between supporters of Julio Cesar and those of Pompeyo took place. The Romans built the first defensive structure in what is now called Teba la Vieja and later the Muslims reinforced and extended the castle, giving it an important enclosure whose remains can still be visited.

It was in Arab times, when the population began to move from the top of the hill to the current location of the town that the Muslims called it "Ostipo".

In August 1330, the battle of Teba took place and Muslims fought against Alfonso XI and some Scottish noblemen, lead by Sir James Douglas. The result was the conquest of the castle but Sir Douglas died on the battlefield. The Scottish were on their way to the Holy Land but they decided to help the King of Castilla on his willing to reconquer and Christianize all the Muslim territories in the Peninsula. Nowadays this event is commemorated by people from the town during Sir Douglas’ days.
