During Romans times, Casariche was a very important town. It was called Ventippo by Romans and it was here where the Battle of Mundatook place, one of the Roman Republic Second Civil War battles between two of the Latin triumvirs: Gnaeus Pompey the Great and Gaius Julius Caesar. The population took advantage of the loser, staying under the protection of the children of Pompey until Cesar conquered it for his faction. Later on, in Arab times it began to highlight its importance as an urban nucleus. The reason being its location, since it was placed on the border between the Arab and Christian kingdoms, the river Yeguas natural border.
This was until February 1241, when the Almohades, after negotiating with King Alfonso X El Sabio, handed Estepa over to the Christians, by then, Casariche was part of Estepa territories. Once the area was pacified after the conquest of the Reino Nazarí de Granada on January 2nd, 1492 and after the death of the King, it was her daughter, Doña Juana de Portugal, who sold the land to Adán Centurión, who, later on received the title of Marqués of Estepa. Finally, in October 1851, the town was declared finally as Town of Casariche, segregating it from Estepa.
From those days till today there is also another remarkable period.During the Bandoleros era here in Spain, Casariche was an important place as it is next to Alameda, where there was an important group of Bandoleros, led by El Tempranillo, one of the most famous.
Fiestas
- Feria de Santiago, around the 25th of July. This fair is celebrated to honour de Saint Patron of the town, Santiago Apóstol. There are four or five days in which lots of activities take place in the town.
- Fiesta de la Candelaria, (Bonfire Night) on the 2nd of February. Lots of bonfires are lit at sundown and during the night people gather around them eating and having fun with family and friends.
- The San Marcos de Casariche Pilgrimage is celebrated on April 25 in honor of San Marcos. From the parish NtraSra de la Encarnación de Casariche, where the statue is located, they go to Lora de Estepa, passing by the outskirts of the surrounding mountains, returning at night after visiting the town. They will arrive at noon and she remain on view until her return to the church at nightfall.
- Romanorum Festum Ventippo, on July. During three days, the town travels through time to celebrate the origins of the town. Many local craft marketstalls (esparto, various complements, olives, t-shirt painting, glass decoration, pharmacy products, etc.) are setup in the town together with the stands of the town associations who take part in this great party. During the evenings, several theatrical performances of classic-roman themes are shown in the Roman Theater, carried out by theater companies. There are also flamenco shows, falconry exhibitions and a Roman costume contest among all those who come dressed in Roman costumes.
